Etsy and other places to buy handmade gifts

What each reports about how items are vetted and what buyer protection or returns they offer, with sources and dates.

We are a competitor. Patuxent Gift Market sells handmade gifts, so this is not a neutral review. We name every source and date so you can check each point yourself. None of these marketplaces has paid us or seen this page, and we earn nothing from links to them. We do not link to them.

One by one

Checked October 24, 2026. We do not rank these places or call any of them best; the right one depends on the gift, the date and your budget. Many shoppers use more than one.

Etsy

Online marketplace

How items are vetted

Etsy’s Seller Policy (updated Oct. 5, 2026) says everything listed must be made, designed, handpicked or sourced by a seller. Sellers must say how each item was made, by whom and where it ships from, and must disclose production partners. Reselling and dropshipping are not allowed, except in cases such as craft supplies.

Buyer protection and returns

Etsy Purchase Protection covers four problems: item not as described, damaged, 7 or more days late, or not received. Eligible orders are refunded, and a registered account is required.

Keep in mind

“Made, designed, handpicked or sourced” is wider than “made by hand”, so read each listing’s description of how the item was made. Sellers pay Etsy fees (about $0.20 per listing, 6.5% transaction fee, and 3% + $0.25 payment processing in the US, per a July 2026 article).

Amazon Handmade

Online marketplace

How items are vetted

Sellers must be approved through an artisan application that a person reviews, per an August 2026 comparison. Approved sellers pay a 15% referral fee and no monthly fee.

Buyer protection and returns

The sources we checked do not describe buyer protection specific to Amazon Handmade. Check Amazon’s own pages before you buy.

Keep in mind

Handmade items sit among a very large catalog. Check the seller name and the product description for how it is made.

How items are vetted

A third-party review describes it as a shop for unique, artisan-made gifts. We did not find its own text on how makers are chosen.

Buyer protection and returns

Most items have no return time limit under its “Free Forever Returns” policy; fine jewelry and live plants must be returned within 30 days. Returns within 30 days of delivery are refunded to the original payment method, and later returns receive a gift card. Domestic returns include a prepaid label.

Keep in mind

Personalized and custom items cannot be returned unless defective. Sale items may be final sale, and direct exchanges are not offered.

In person

How items are vetted

You meet the maker and see the item before you pay. No description needed in writing because you can ask the maker directly.

Buyer protection and returns

Terms vary by stall, and there is usually no formal protection program. Ask for a receipt.

Keep in mind

Selection is limited to who attends that day, and personalization may take a second visit or an order.

Shopping handmade anywhere

  • Read how the item is made, not just the word “handmade”.
  • Compare the total with shipping, not just the item price.
  • Check the delivery date against the day you need the gift.
  • Look at return terms before you personalize anything.

Where we fit

We cannot tell you from this page whether we have what you want or beat these marketplaces on price. Send a gift request and we will answer with options, prices and delivery dates in writing, so you can compare.
